Learning Giant Steps #2

In my previous post, I wrote out the basic chord sequence, then provided a number of versions of the backing track, to give you something to practice against.

So how would I suggest you approach this track? Well lets break it down and analyse the music harmonically. If I write down the chord structure, and above each line, write the tonal center for each section, we have.

Tonal Centres for Giant Steps Chords.

As you can see, the sequence moves between 3 different key centers, each is a Major Third away from the other two. We can see this more easily if I write out all 12 tones of the chromatic scale in a circle, and highlight these notes.

Hopefully, this really demonstrates the symmetry underlying the harmony in this piece. Interestingly this imposes a similar symmetry to the layout of the 3 scales on the guitar neck, which can simplify playing this greatly.

Let me see if I can demonstrate in the following sets of finger patterns.

Guitar Scales for Giant Steps

Looking at these vertically, we can see that each set of charts have have identical finger patterns. Horizontally, we can see that these finger shapes repeat each 3 times per octave each shape being used once per chord.

Lets look at the next set of patterns.

If you learn the position of these sets of charts, you should find that it is relatively easy to play through the changes over the entire guitar neck.

Give it a go, and see how you get on!
