Jamming with the Lydian Mode

The Lydian mode is based on the 4th degree of the Major scale. This produces a Major scale with a the 4th degree raised a semitone. In other words, if I were to convert a C Major scale to a C Lydian scale, I’d play an F# instead of an F natural.

Lets get on with the jam track itself. The chord sequence is just two chords played over a constant bass note. In this case I’m playing,

|| C/Bb | Bb   ||

In other words I’m playing a C Major Chord, with a Bb bass note, followed by a Bb chord. (The C Major chord contains an E natural, and the sustained Bb bass, implies a Bb root. So the combination of these two sets of pitches implies the Lydian Mode).

Here’s the track.

If you want to find out more about modes and their application, the person who first introduced me to the subject was Frank Gambale, in this video.
