Jamming through all 12 keys

This mp3 backing track is a little more challenging than my previous posts. This time I’m cycling through all 12 keys, changing key every 2 bars, using the “Cycle of Fifths”.

The chord sequence I’m using is…

| Dm7  G7  Gm7  C7
   Cm7  F7  Fm7  Bb7
   Bbm7 Eb7 Ebm7 Ab7
   Abm7 Db7 Dbm7 Gb7
   Gbm7 B7  Bm7  E7
   Em7  A7  Am7  D7 | x4

Each pair of chords defines a key. So Dm7 and G7 are the ii7 and V7 chords of the key of C Major.  Continuing with this we see…

Gm7 C7 = F Major
Cm7 F7 = Bb Major
Fm7 Bb7 = Eb Major
etc.

So how to play over this? Well there are a number of ways.

  1. Use the Major scale associated with each pair of chords.
  2. Use the Minor 7 Pentatonic over the Minor chord and Dominant 9th Pentatonic over the following 7th.
  3. Use the Minor 7 Arpeggio over the Minor chord and the Dominant 7th Arpeggio over the following 7th.
  4. Use all of the above!

You may find that this twists you in knots when you first try to play over it. If you struggle with it, try using a software package like Audacity, which allows you to loop over a section at a time. Get used each key in turn then start to fit them together.

Enough talk lets get working with the track!
