Following on from my last Jam track “Melodic Changes“, this time I’m focussing on using the Harmonic Minor as part of a chord progression.
So the harmony is as follows…
|| Cm | | Dm7b5 | G7b9 ||
The first two bars are Cm so play a C Minor scale (C Aeolian) over them. The second two bars are Dm7b5 and G7b9. Both of these chords have the same Dominant function. In this case a C Harmonic Minor will work over them.
So that’s the basic approach made to this sequence. C Aeolian for 2 bars, then C Harmonic Minor for 2 bars.
Let’s get to the track itself.
If you’re new to the Harmonic Minor, Don Mock has created a great book, with an examples CD which I’d definitely recommend you get and work through. In fact I’d recommend anything by Don Mock.
